Steal This Movie

Last night, my band played at LACMA before a screening of the new Sean Penn film, Into the Wild. You need this movie; there won't be a better one this year. It just might be an all-time favorite. Really. I mean it.

Not everyone will feel this way of course. The same stories don't speak in precisely the same tones or at similar amplitudes for all people. I have always been loved the "coming of age" genre, the bildungsroman, which concerns itself with young men taking that journey into manhood. Despite the fact of my femaleness, my old friend, Steven B., would say my attraction here is caused by the thirteen-year-old boy he feels is trapped inside me. My psychologist friend would add that it's an unresolved puer aeternus complex. Same diff.

In any case it's no matter, the film is just great in about every way, but make sure you go in well hydrated.

It looks interesting, but with narratives like this, there is often a tenancy toward contriviality.
Yes, I'm coining words now.
See what you miss when you takes weeks off at a time?

Wouldn't that be well-"de"hydrated?

I was looking forward to this because of the involvement of Zach Galifianakis and Eddie Vedder. I'm hoping Penn doesn't go overboard (like Huckleberry implied).

I'll let you know what I think - just don't hold your breath. My moviegoing is lax these days.

Huck - I know what you're saying. I don't think you'll feel that way about it - though there may be a touch of that in the first few minutes. Anyway, I'm sure I look forward to your opinions, whatever they are, Mr. Numisto-neologist.

And the weeks they do fly by. I've been keeping my mouth shut pricipally out of mercy for my limited readership. I intend neither to depress nor to bore.

I think I'll go make blackberry cobbler now.

Citizen H - Yes, afterwards.

McGone - I'm holding my breath.

So it's a tear jerker? I hate that. Or at least I hate going into a movie knowing I'm going to have my emotions jerked around. I like to be surprised.

But I will go see it. I like Sean Penn. He is a wonderful actor that manages to consistently fly under the radar.

Hey sis, did you ever see Old Joy? It takes place at Bagbee Hot Springs. I heard good things about it, but it disappeared before I got a chance to see it.

"Contriviality"--that's darned good. I didn't read the book so I intend to see the flick. Does he get eaten by a bear? I hope he gets eaten by a bear. I have never seen a movie that wasn't improved by having the protagonist get eaten by a bear. Welcome back Kissyface!
